Own a Maytag Bravos Washer? Here Is What to Know Before It Breaks

The Maytag Bravos is a high-efficiency (HE) top-load washer line, and if yours feels different from the washer you grew up with, that is because it is. Instead of a tall center agitator that twists clothes around a post, the Bravos uses a low-profile wash plate at the bottom of the tub. It spins and pulses to move clothes through a smaller amount of water, which is gentler on fabric and uses significantly less water and energy per load.

That design is also why a Bravos runs longer than an older agitator washer, sometimes 45 minutes to over an hour for a normal cycle. That is expected behavior, not a malfunction — the machine is using sensors to gauge load size and soil level, then adjusting water and spin accordingly rather than running a fixed timer.

The single most common issue we get called for is a 'UL' or 'unbalanced load' error paired with the washer stopping mid-cycle. Because the Bravos relies on high spin speeds to extract water, it is more sensitive to uneven weight distribution than older machines. A single heavy item like a comforter or a pair of jeans bunched on one side is often enough to trigger it. Pausing the cycle, redistributing the load evenly around the wash plate, and restarting usually clears it.

The second most common issue is detergent residue — a waxy film on dark clothes or a musty smell from the drum. HE washers use much less water, so regular detergent does not fully rinse out and can build up on the wash plate and door gasket. Always use detergent labeled 'HE,' use less than you think you need, and run an empty tub-clean cycle with affresh or a cup of bleach once a month.
